Critical global thinking for progressive change

Portrait of Dena Freeman smiling in the library.

I am a Professor of Global Studies at Shanghai University and a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Department of Anthropology, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

My work centres on global critical theory and the dynamics of progressive social change.

I use transdisciplinary approaches, drawing from critical political-economy, global history and social anthropology, to explore past and present questions of internationalism, development, systemic transformation, planetary politics and world order.

Underlying all my work is a strong sense of solidarity with the sub-altern, a recognition of universal humanity and a desire to see a world in which no-one is hungry and everyone can flourish.

Areas of research

1

Critical Global Theory

How could world politics be organised in a more just and democratic way? How have different people, from the global North and South, envisioned a fairer world order and struggled to make it a reality? How could an inclusive, democratic planetary politics be constructed?

2

International development

What happens when traditional socio-cultural systems encounter capitalism? What role do beliefs, values and culture play in the transformation of subjectivities and social systems? How do international development NGOs try to bring about change and why do they often fail?

3

Anthropology of Ethiopia

Ethnography of the Gamo Highlands of southwest Ethiopia. How is inequality constructed in relatively equal societies? Is there caste in Africa? How is marginalisation produced and experienced? What are the dynamics of cultural transformation in rural Ethiopia?
